School's Out, But Therapy's In: Summer Program Helps Students During School Break
Summer therapy program for high-risk, learning disabled students, 1992-1998
These seven grants provided partial support to a special summer therapy program of The Center School, a private institution that serves as a regional center in central New Jersey for educating and treating children with learning disabilities.
Called "Bridging the Gap," the program allowed students with serious mental health problems to continue their therapy during the school's summer vacation in order to reduce the risk of regression at the start of the school year.
Key Results
- Participating students attended at least two sessions weekly with members of their therapeutic team.
- Students also had the opportunity to enjoy camp-like activities, such as art, music, shop, physical education, computer techniques, and cooking.
- The number of students attending the program grew from 13 to 41 during the grant period.
Funding
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided partial support for this program with seven grants totaling $114,000 from July 1992 to August 1998.
