Hospital-Based, Acute Care Following Ambulatory Surgery Center Discharge

Ambulance pulling out of hospital emergency area.

After ambulatory surgery, rates of hospital-based acute care may be a better measure of quality than rates of immediate transfer to a hospital on discharge.

Very few patients receiving care at an ambulatory surgery center are sent to a hospital on discharge (1.1/1,000). In this study, however, 30 times as many (31.8/1,000) received acute care in an emergency department or were admitted to a hospital within 7 days of their surgery.
