The 'How' and the 'What'

In this contribution to a special supplement of the American Journal of Nursing, executives of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) detail the evolution, specific processes (such as “rapid-cycle design”) and pilot program results and highlights of the Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) initiative, a quality improvement program created by IHI and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to improve inpatient hospital care and nurses’ daily work lives. Since 2003, the program has been piloted in three phases at 13 hospitals and, according to the authors, has proven to be transformative because of its unprecedented impact on patients, their families, nurses and other front-line staff.
