People may spend hours preparing for a date but fail to prepare for a far more important meeting—an appointment with their doctor. The time patients have with their doctors is crucial to their health. Aligning Forces for Quality, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, developed this checklist as a guide to help consumers prepare for medical visits.
When getting ready for a visit with a medical professional, consider these recommendations:
- Prepare questions in advance of the appointment.
- Ask questions about your treatment, condition or self-management.
- Talk freely about prescriptions or medications you are taking, symptoms, treatments and test results.
- Take notes during the visit.
