In early 2006, ASTHO (Association of State and Territorial Health Officials) began the Public Health Law and Policy Initiative to address the needs of state health officials related to law and legislative matters. These included supporting greater networking among state health officials on legislative and legal issues and learning from its members and staff their needs in the area of law and legislation. This project funded implementation of the initiative from October 2006 through March 2008.
A report, State Health Agency Legislative Directors Pilot Project: Report of Key Informant Interviews, described legislative directors' responsibilities and their interactions with other state officials and identified needs for greater collaboration across states.
The association established a network of 33 state legislative health directors to share information and receive technical assistance.
A report, Exploring the Future of Public Health Law: A Dialogue on Past Accomplishments and Future Directions, summarized findings from interviews with, and a meeting of, public health law experts.
