From Status Quo to Top Children's Hospital

Synopsis of the Work: Transforming Hospital Culture was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in which 10 hospitals documented their stories of improving their organizational culture, with the goal of helping other hospitals understand how to create and sustain culture change in their institutions.

Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo. was one of the participating hospitals. After the CEO had the vision of being the best children's hospital in the world, the small hospital turned its culture around by giving hospital staff more authority, for example, by encouraging nurses and other staff to bring forward solutions to issues they saw in their daily work and by making patients and families the focus of all decisions. This sidebar describes the steps Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics took to transform into one of the top ranked children's hospitals in the country (according to Child magazine).
