This article introduces the November 2008 Supplement to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine that focused on Prescription for Health: Reshaping Practice to Support Health Behavior Change in Primary Care. Specifically examining the second round of results of the Prescription for Health program, this introduction provides an overview to the project, the evaluation and the findings.
A total of 10 primary care practice-based research networks (PBRNs) participated in a study testing behavior-change counseling strategies over two years. Participants shared results through a secure Web site diary system with the evaluation team. From this data, Prescription for Health concludes that health behavior counseling is an integral part of the effort to improve quality, reduce disparities and offer affordable care. This supplement contains an array of articles adding to the discussion surrounding health behavior change and the Prescription for Health program.
