Editors' Introduction

Seeding and nurturing new fields is one approach that has characterized the Foundation’s grantmaking since its very beginning in 1972. Previous volumes of the Anthology have explored the Foundation’s efforts to build the fields of nursing and nurse practitioners, tobacco control, and end-of-life care. The chapters in this year’s volume of the Anthology reveal much more about both approaches to improving health and health care and the ways that one foundation operates.

Taken as a whole, we hope that the book continues to fulfill what Risa Lavizzo-Mourey termed in her foreword as the Foundation’s “responsibility to be as accountable for our programs as it is for our finances.”
