The Center for Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Learning convened two meetings of the annual Congress of Health Professions Educators, June 4–5, 2001, and June 3–4, 2002, in Washington.
The center is a joint initiative of the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Association of Academic Health Centers.
Key Results: Each year, the congress brings together some 100 faculty and administrators to discuss the future of education and practice for health professionals.
- The 8th congress, "Solving the Workforce Crisis: Lessons from Clinical Practice and the Corporate World," held June 4–5, 2001, focused on critical shortages in the health professions workforce.
- The 9th congress, "Faculty Shortages Across the Health Professions: Implications for Teaching and Workforce," held June 3–4, 2002, focused on shortages in the faculty workforce in health professions education, such as nursing and pharmacy.
- Published proceedings for both congresses were distributed to some 500 leaders in the health professions and higher education.
Afterward: The Center for Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Learning and Partnerships for Training: Regional Education Systems for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives and Physician Assistant, an RWJF national program that is working to improve access to health care by reducing shortages in the health care workforce convened the 10th Congress, "Maximizing Your ROI: Collaboration and Quality in Distance Learning," June 2–3, 2003, in Washington.
Participants examined issues in collaborative and distance learning, with a special emphasis on how institutions can maximize their returns on investments made in establishing distance learning programs. The proceedings were published and dissemination is in process.
