Support for the ongoing activities of Independent Sector, 1999-2002

From 1999 to 2002, Independent Sector, Washington, a coalition of leading nonprofit organizations, foundations and corporations, carried out a variety of activities to promote nonprofit organizations.

Key Results

The Independent Sector worked to:

  • Increase public awareness of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector while promoting increased giving and volunteering, active citizenship and community service.
  • Build relationships with government.
  • Promote research about the independent sector.
  • Enhance the leadership and management skills of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations.


A $600,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided partial support for the ongoing activities of Independent Sector from August 1999 to July 2002.

It was a follow-up to a $500,000 RWJF grant for general support in 1996 (ID# 029506). Contributions from other donors, including foundations and corporations, provided an additional $13 million during the three-year grant period.
