Advice on How to Advise Students in Science and Engineering

Preparation of guides for advising undergraduate and graduate science and engineering students

The National Academy of Sciences, in conjunction with the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, developed a guide to improve the advising of undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of science and engineering.

Key Results

  • Produced a single, integrated guide suitable for all advisers, entitled Adviser, Teacher, Role Model, Friend: On Being a Mentor to Students in Science and Engineering, which is available online.

  • Published 40,000 copies of the guide and disseminated them to more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide, as well as to organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

    The guide received the Athena Award for Excellence in Mentoring.
