OpenNotes: Supporting expansion of the practice of giving patients access to physicians' medical notes
This project will further the spread of the practice of opening physicians' notes to patients to the point where it reaches critical mass and, thus, has sufficient momentum to become a national standard of care. The OpenNotes team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will catalyze this spread by: (1) working with stakeholders to build a movement; (2) supporting early adopters; (3) creating resources that facilitate adoption and implementation; (4) learning from the early implementations; and (5) mentoring young researchers who are studying open notes. Deliverables from the project will include: increased adoption of open notes by leading health care systems and providers in select regions; toolkits that support adoption decisions and implementations; a national conference; and evaluations of open notes implementations at four sites.
