Increasing capacity of Brotherhood/Sister Sol to serve young males of color and evaluating the effectiveness of its services

The Foundation's Forward Promise Initiative aims to improve the health of young men and boys of color and enhance their opportunities for success in school, work, and life.Brotherhood/Sister Sol provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth. The program's model prioritizes three areas for youth development -- academic achievement, holistic education rooted in racial literacy and identity development, and global competence. The goal of school-based Rites of Passage Program work is to empower youth to develop emotional intelligence, critical thinking skills, and educational achievement. To support youths' mental and emotional health, the BHSS model includes group counseling, partnerships with mental health experts, and art therapy. Group Counseling and program services are provided to all members, with special attention to members exposed to trauma. This grant supports these capacity-building activities: (1) development of a research design method to codify the process for collection, measurement and data analysis, (2) evaluation of the program model and exploration of opportunities for replication (3) expansion of existing services and partnerships, and (4) increased capability of the education and emotional development services to support more young men.
