Providing Aligning Forces for Quality alliances with minigrants to use for technical assistance, 2013-2015

The Foundation's initiative, Aligning Forces for Quality: The Regional Market Place, was designed to help communities across the country align health care forces to improve the quality of health care. This project will complement and enhance the annual technical assistance and direction (TAD) grant that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation makes to the national program office (NPO) for Aligning Forces for Quality. Each of 16 grantee organizations involved in Aligning Forces will be eligible to apply for a minigrant from the Aligning Forces NPO for the opportunity to purchase technical assistance that suits its needs. Although the NPO provides myriad technical assistance to grantees in the core areas of Aligning Forces, in some cases they need the flexibility to directly select technical assistance providers of their choosing. Grantees will use the minigrants for such technical assistance as external experts or consultants. NPO will continue oversight of the funding and will ensure that grantees use the funding appropriately in relation to program goals. The minigrant is an opportunity for each grantee to design and implement a strategy for sustaining its work as Aligning Forces approaches completion in 2015. The grants will be up to $200,000 per site, which amount the Foundation will offset against future TAD grants. This is a significant increase over last year's minigrant ceiling of $40,000 per site; the increased amount is a reflection of the successful use of minigrants in 2012 and of the enhanced and urgent focus on sustaining each site's impact as Aligning Forces comes to a close.
