Upgrading the Red Cross system for mobilizing lifesaving resources, Phase 1

This grant support will allow the American Red Cross (ARC) to complete an important project within the current overhaul of its system for supply-chain management. The grant will specifically fund an effort to gather all disaster-related inventories from more than 600 ARC chapter locations nationwide and load that information into the new ARC national inventory and procurement system. This project will allow ARC to then manage that inventory centrally and electronically, rather than manually, across many locations. This project will also structure this inventory information to allow for implementation of the final phase of the ARC's planned end-to-end system for supply-chain management. Specifically, this project will support temporary workers and consultants who will capture, collect, rationalize and optimize all current disaster-related inventory held by local ARC chapters. That information will become a catalog in the national ARC procurement system. The project will also create a mapping application that will help identify precisely where inventory items are geographically, which will help ensure that the ARC staff takes inventory from the closest and most logical storage site, reducing response time and shipping costs.
