Leadership for Healthy Communities: Advancing Policies to Support Healthy Eating and Active Living

The Foundation's program, Leadership for Healthy Communities: Advancing Policies to Support Healthy Eating and Active Living, was designed to work with elected and appointed officials to create and promote healthier communities. The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official nonpartisan organization of the nation's approximately 1,300 cities with populations of 30,000 or more. USCM's policy intervention seeks to address the problem of food deserts (and related food policy issues) by providing mayors and their food policy staff with the tools needed to develop and implement, through nonlegislative means, local food policy strategies that turn food deserts into locations with healthy foods options and choices. The primary vehicle for this project will be USCM's recently created Food Policy Task Force, which focuses on reducing obesity, increasing access to healthy food in low-income communities, increasing local food procurement in cities, as well as analyzing the impact of federal policy on food access and food security in urban areas. USCM will grow the work of this task force through several key nonlegislative strategies. First, USCM is planning a Food Access Best Practices report that will provide a snapshot of what cities around the country are doing to address food deserts and improve the health of their community, while also sharing a roadmap for cities of all sizes to increase healthy food access for their own residents. Secondly, USCM plans to develop a technical assistance network and food policy speaker's bureau to support the work of mayors and their food policy staff. USCM will coordinate and convene cities seeking to support and develop local food economies. Thirdly, USCM will work the task force to encourage mayors to adopt local and national policy positions that advance of the work of the task force and the USCM through nonlegislative means.
