Constructing scenarios for the year 2030 to explore the future of public health
To advance the goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to strengthen the public health system and, specifically, public health departments, this project will support development of four scenarios to explore how local health departments might look in the year 2030. The revelations will serve as a resource for various organizations working in public health to navigate current and emerging challenges and maximize opportunities. The Institute for Alternative Futures will develop the scenarios with advice from local health departments and through field forecasts in partnership with the Prevention Institute, interviews, and expert focus groups. The grantee will hold a national workshop to vet the scenarios and will conduct other workshops and presentations to share the scenarios with specific public health audiences. The grantee will also develop a video toolkit that will assist local health departments with the developed scenarios and assist them in developing their own. The Foundation anticipates that the scenarios will also benefit professional associations such as the American Public Health Association, the National Association of County and City Health Officials, and private and governmental public health funders as they move forward with supporting various programs and projects in the field. The grantee will conduct an evaluation, with results to be shared with the Foundation and the project's co-funder, the Kresge Foundation.
