The Foundation's initiative, Advancing Accreditation in Large Jurisdictions, was designed to supply financial and technical assistance to big cities and states to catalyze application to the Public Health Accreditation Board for accreditation of their public health agencies. This project will accelerate the application for accreditation by state public health agencies in three states with the largest populations in the country by supporting the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) in providing technical support and a network for exchanging successful practices. ASTHO will participate in an advisory committee to select the three states; assist in determining the needs of each state; provide customized coaching and direct technical assistance to the selected states; advise states on selection of expert consultants who can help the states achieve specific requirements, such as performance-managements systems; provide webinars and conference calls to promote exchange between the selected states and others with relevant successful practices; and synthesize and make available to all public health agencies the useful lessons that will advance their achievement of accreditation. For New Jersey, if the state public health agency were to receive separate funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, ASTHO would include the Foundation's home state in the network and provide coaching for agency staff. Successful examples of model practices that facilitate accreditation applications by November 2014 from public health agencies in the largest states will pave the way for other agencies to pursue and achieve accreditation.
