Encouraging academic health centers to emphasize social determinants of health to more effectively improve health and well-being
This grant supports the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) in convening a meeting in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 12 and 13, 2012, to encourage leaders of academic health centers to place more emphasis on addressing the social determinants of health. AAHC is the leading organization working on behalf of the nation's academic health centers. Membership is offered to accredited, degree-granting institutions of higher education that educate a wide variety of health care professionals, offer comprehensive basic and advanced patient care, and conduct a broad spectrum of biomedical and health services research. AAHC recognizes that academic health centers, which often serve as providers of safety-net care, are uniquely positioned to positively impact the social determinants of health. Currently, support is growing among academic health centers for the social determinants of health as an integral part of their curriculum, research, and clinical programs. In partnership with two of its member institutions, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of California, Davis, AAHC plans to capitalize on that growing support and use the meeting as an opportunity to identify potential partnerships and collaborations with other health-related sectors. Additionally, AAHC plans to create a toolkit to help academic health centers address the social determinants of health within their programs. The toolkit will include examples of successful programs, best practices, and strategies for changing internal policies and procedures.
