Supporting the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership to build capacity and leadership and develop plans for research and evaluation (Phase 1)

This funding supports capacity-building that will strengthen the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership (National Center). The National Center supports the expansion and advancement of local medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) through technical assistance, dissemination of best practices, leadership training, an annual MLP summit, and coordination of national research and policy activities related to health disparities and vulnerable populations. With funding from the Kresge Foundation, the National Center developed a business plan that revealed clear activities needed for growth. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funding will enable the National Center to complete the following activities: (1) build new capacity, leadership and governance structures that will strengthen it; (2) develop specific plans for communications, research, and evaluation; and (3) realign organizational priorities to capture emerging opportunities with MLP sites and new partners. At the end of the grant period, the National Center will have achieved the following outcomes: (1) a stable leadership and an infrastructure that can support growth; (2) plans for communications, research, and evaluation; and (3) new organizational priorities, with multi-sector support for the MLP model.
