Supporting Phase 2 of the Facing Our Future project on effective and efficient ways to provide essential government services in New Jersey
This grant supports helping update and disseminating the initial Facing our Future report's findings for New Jersey, and determining the applicability of its recommendations to address the state's fiscal problems. Led by a nonpartisan leadership group of former state cabinet, judicial and other leaders, the report provides an independent, objective and data-driven analysis of revenue and spending across four levels of government (state, county, municipal, and school districts). Using projections of moderate revenue growth, the report concludes that without service cuts, public-service providers will face an unprecedented shortfall by 2016. This grant will also: (1) identify revenue and spending gaps, in the coming years, of a select number of municipalities; (2) examine the applicability of best practices and policies in other states and municipalities; (3) support town-hall-style gatherings and public forums, and conduct leadership retreats and other outreach to inform and engage New Jersey residents and policymakers; and (4) support media events to help frame informed consensus on future priorities, policy solutions, and best practices to improve the efficiency of the delivery of government services. The grantee will not use Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds for any lobbying purposes.
