Disseminating updated Beers Criteria to institutions and clinicians involved in the care of older adults

This project will disseminate the Beers Criteria, a list that is used by providers who treat older patients to inform the appropriate use of medications that pose an elevated risk of adverse drug events (ADEs). ADEs occur disproportionately in older adults and contribute significantly to preventable complications, such as falls and fractures, which place a further burden on patients, families and the health care system. The list, which was last updated in 2003, is also used by public and private policy organizations, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The updated criteria will be publicized in relevant journals, at meetings and online; shared with national partner organizations; and made available in downloadable tools for use in clinical settings.
