Technical assistance and direction for RWJF's Salud America! program

The Foundation's program, Salud America! The RWJF Research Network to Prevent Obesity Among Latino Children, was designed to stimulate and support investigator-initiated research and build a field of researchers focused on preventing obesity among Latino children. This grant supports the fifth and final year for the five-year Salud America! National Program Office (NPO). In addition to support for pilot research, the program also provides substantial technical assistance and networking opportunities for new investigators in this area of research, positioning them for future awards from federal agencies and from foundations. Although all the seed grants have been awarded, in Year 4 the NPO will undertake the following activities: continued expansion of the research network to include additional researchers and community leaders who might use the research findings; development of additional communication channels in both Spanish and English; planning of the second Salud America! Scientific Summit Meeting; and coaching and mentoring the grantees on publications and grant submissions. In addition, the NPO is working closely with the grantees to use common measures (where possible) of policy and environmental factors affecting childhood obesity and seeking ways to quantify the policy development process. Deliverables will include: a 2010 National Advisory Committee report; recruiting 1500 members of the research network by Year 5 of the program; summary results in Year 5 of a survey of network members and grantees; publication of a journal article on the Latino childhood obesity research agenda in Health Education and Behavior this year; the annual conference agenda and report; a webpage devoted to the pilot investigators that have received grants; and attendance at other meetings of RWJF Childhood Obesity national programs.
