Supporting the local partnership to prevent childhood obesity in New Brunswick, N.J.

The Foundation's initiative, New Jersey Addresses Childhood Obesity, was designed to support efforts to seed community and state partnerships to prevent childhood obesity in New Jersey.This grant project will implement a strategic plan to change policies and environments to reduce childhood obesity in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids-New Brunswick has completed a seven-month strategic plan to improve access to healthy foods and physical activity throughout the city. Implementation activities will include expanding the community's core planning team to include new partners, establishing a food-policy council, and establishing joint-use agreements with schools and recreation sites. Strategies include increasing access to indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, coordinating efforts to address food security, and partnering with the city Board of Education to enhance and implement the New Brunswick Public Schools' nutrition policy. The partnership will not use Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds for lobbying.
