Documenting the history of the physician assistant profession

This grant supports the discovery and review of original-source documents (i.e., bylaws, minutes, position papers and publications) necessary for production of the first complete history of the physician assistant profession. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation was instrumental in promoting and helping to expand the profession during its nascency in the 1970s, and the history will feature the Foundation's role prominently. Project directors Alfred M. Sadler and Thomas E. Piemme will be the principal authors of the anticipated history, which will catalog the development of the profession over the past several decades, as well as the relationship between physician assistants and other health professionals.
