The Foundation's program, Leadership for Healthy Communities: Advancing Policies to Support Healthy Eating and Active Living, was designed to work with elected and appointed officials to create and promote healthier communities.Consistent with their strategic plan, Leadership for Healthy Communities (LHC) has two primary goals for the 2011-2012 technical assistance and direction grant: (1) Build political will by nurturing a policy environment conducive for the adoption, implementation, and strengthening of Health Eating Active Living (HEAL) policies, and (2) Provide technical assistance, strategic direction and support to grantees and select governmental entities. In addition, LHC will continue to emphasize efforts to support vulnerable populations through targeted efforts in the Southeastern and Southwestern regions and through collaborations with the National Congress of American Indians and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. In 2011-2012, LHC will continue to provide tailored technical assistance to their grantees to support various policy-maker groups; develop and disseminate key products such as reports and fact sheets; promote the Action Strategies Toolkit and curriculum to advance policy adoption, implementation and promotion; and host a Policy-maker Summit. Building on past efforts and relationships, LHC will leverage policy-maker champions and connect them with education and media opportunities. LHC will work closely with RWJF legal counsel to ensure that all activities meet the Foundation's prohibitions on lobbying and to mitigate any risk from the potential perception of lobbying.
