This grant supports the creation of a mentorship template and associated instructional materials for underrepresented dental practitioners and dissemination of the template and materials at dental schools and within the dental workforce. The template and materials will encompass key elements, including: definitions of mentorship roles and responsibilities; models of successful recruitment techniques for underrepresented minority mentors and mentees; train-the-trainer processes; techniques to increase mentor and mentee participation; and strategies for sustaining the dental-mentorship model. The continued use and spread of this mentorship template among dental professionals and students, within the original Dental Pipeline pilot locations and beyond, will increase the number of underrepresented dental professionals trained to use the model to ensure ongoing exposure, recruitment and mentoring of existing, as well as potential, underrepresented dental students. A by-product of this project will be the creation of a connected network of underrepresented dental professionals and students. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation expects that the further spread of these training materials will aid in the recruitment of underrepresented ethnic students to the dental profession and their retention. The National Dental Association (NDA) will disseminate the training materials to pre-health advisers within the participating schools, as well as to other key stakeholders and professional organizations. During the planned annual conferences of NDA, the Hispanic Dental Association and the Society of American Indian Dentists, these professional organizations will hold a special session to share the opportunities and outcomes of the template. Also, they will feature articles and updates on their Web sites.
