Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This four-year grant will supply the Eric B. Chandler Health Center partial operating support to continue to serve as a critical safety-net provider for the medically underserved residents of the Greater New Brunswick, New Jersey, area. The grant will help the Center maintain key staff positions to: (1) maintain the current level of direct medical care; (2) retain counseling services for patients with mental illness and community-outreach efforts for health promotion; (3) implement quality-improvement plans; and (4) support the education and training program for health care professionals from 2010 through 2014. In tandem with this grant, RWJF will award the Foundation of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey another $2 million for a challenge grant to help establish an $4-million endowment for the Center. That grant will be matched on a 1-to-1 dollar basis by other funders. By 2015, the endowment is expected to produce sufficient partial income to sustain the Center's operations.
