Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health

The Foundation's initiative, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health (PBRN), was designed to develop a practice-based research network for public health to help stakeholders understand how public health systems research can be used to improve public health performance and impact. The Nebraska PBRN will conduct ongoing studies related to the newly established regional public health systems within the State, with an early focus on organizational and workforce issues. Future research foci will seek to identify effective governance structures and community partnership approaches; public health services financing challenges; and services-related quality improvement strategies -- all viewed through the lens of regionalization. The PBRN provides a framework for collaboration among a broad array of partners, including Nebraska's recently regionalized public health departments; the University of Nebraska (UN) Medical Center Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, School of Allied Health Professions and new College of Public Health; the UN campuses at Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney; Creighton University; numerous health-related associations; and four urban and rural single-county health departments. The network is led by the Nebraska Division of Public Health with co-principal investigators from practice and academia.
