Using the Current Population Survey and the American Community Survey to assess Medicaid and SCHIP participation across the country

This grant funds the development of a model, using the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey and its new American Community Survey, to simulate state eligibility for Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). This simulation model will increase RWJF's ability to accurately measure the number of uninsured children in each state and, for the first time, provide reliable estimates about the proportion of uninsured children who are eligible for Medicaid and SCHIP. Deliverables will include policy briefs, journal articles and presentations designed to provide descriptive numbers about the size and variability of participation rates across states, as well as to estimate the change in participation rates across periods as a result of the Foundation's programs.
