Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships
The Foundation's initiative, Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships, was designed to fund a national effort to develop and implement effective strategies to prevent relationship violence among youth. The purpose of this project is to empower youth, age 10 through 18, with healthy relationships through education, peer mentoring and support from other adults, resulting in a decrease of intimate partner violence and sexual assault. By the end of the initiative, the program will implement curriculum in four middle schools and two high schools. Catholic Charities has previously used out of school curriculum such as Coaching Boys Into Men, SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood. Students who have gone through several years of training with the program will then become mentors for younger students just beginning the program. Through partnerships with the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, the Wichita Public School District and Wichita State University Department of Sociology and Center for Community Support and Research, this project will engage the wider Wichita community.
