Assessing the utilization of outdoor gym installations in public parks and their impact on physical activity among park users
The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of outdoor gym installations called Fitness Zones on adult and child physical activity levels and park usage in parks across Los Angeles, California. Observational measures and park-user surveys will be used to collect physical activity data and park use levels pre- and post-installations. Deliverables will include publications and online and research presentations to disseminate research findings. Findings also will be provided to The Trust for Public Lands, funder of the Fitness Zones, to disseminate to their constituents, policy makers, and media outlets.
