The purpose of this project is to improve the health and life outcomes of low-income young men, especially young men of color, by providing training in journalism and media production, combined with health education and career development. Youth Radio will create a sports and fitness beat as part of its Health Desk coverage to encourage youth to examine the health, social and cultural issues that most affect them and to make their voices heard on these issues. Youth Radio will distribute the content (commentaries, reports, news stories and blogs) to youth and adult audiences through local and national media outlets, including traditional and alternative radio, television, the Internet and mobile technologies (e.g., phone texting). The project will also deliver training in media literacy and technical skills to least 20 high-risk youths; production and distribution of 32 public affairs radio programs and 26 commentaries and stories from the sports and fitness beat; and a compilation disk featuring all the new beat's products.
