Support for the ongoing activities of the Center for Effective Philanthropy, 2008-2012

This grant supports the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) in its work to assess and improve the performance of philanthropic organizations. Foundation performance is difficult to measure because such organizations operate without market pressures, public accountability and comparative benchmarks. However, in the six years since its founding, CEP has become a leader in developing better tools to manage and govern foundations. CEP's mission is to help foundations be successful by promoting the formulation of clear foundation goals and coherent strategies and finding ways to measure them. Products that CEP has developed to achieve that mission include grantee perception reports, comparative board reports, staff perception reports and a strategy study. Additional products are under development. CEP has an experienced, engaged board; a high-quality staff; and a clear plan for growth. RWJF and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation will be co-equal lead funders for this core support. During the four-year grant period, CEP will expand the use of assessment tools, increase research, add publications, develop new programs and improve communications. Supporting CEP's work is consistent with RWJF's role as a leader in evaluation of program effectiveness and as a leading "good citizen" in supporting the overall effectiveness of the philanthropic sector.
