Increasing the number and effectiveness of diversity programs at health professions schools to help address the problem of health disparities

Minority populations in the United States increasingly have less access to health care services than the majority population. In too many cases, race or ethnicity still determines health status, access to health care and health outcomes. There is substantial evidence that health professionals of racially or ethnically diverse backgrounds provide services to their communities at a significantly higher rate than non-diverse providers. It is also widely recognized that minorities are severely underrepresented in the health professions. Efforts to increase the number of these providers across the health professions have become a priority for various groups committed to reducing health disparities among the underserved.With support from this grant and to help address this problem, The Sullivan Alliance will provide guidance and support to burgeoning models that connect undergraduate schools that have predominantly minority students with health professions schools that have very few underrepresented students. The Sullivan Alliance was created to act on the reports and recommendations from the Sullivan Commission's "Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions" (funded by W.K. Kellogg Foundation) and the Institute of Medicine's "In the Nation's Compelling Interes -- Ensuring Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce." The purpose of this project is to expand the opportunities for underrepresented minorities to gain entry into a range of health professions by strengthening and creating of alliances between targeted undergraduate schools and health professions schools. The Sullivan Alliance will provide expertise to both current and new academic collaborations. The Alliance is currently based at the Joint Center for Health Policy Institute, in Washington, D.C. The deliverables for this project include: (1) creation of two or more new alliances between undergraduate and health professions schools; (2) expansion in the size, effectiveness and programs of the two existing alliances; (3) hosting one or more national forums on the operations and success of these models; and (4) completion of three or more publications and presentation of six or more public speaking engagements over a 24-month period.
