Forty years after the founding of health services research, the time is right for a thoughtful reassessment of this field so that it can continue to make important and needed contributions to informing health care policy and practice. While many workforce studies have made projections of health care professional shortages, very little is known about the need for personnel trained in health services research. Understanding the workforce needs of health services research is important to the Foundation because much of its research and evaluation is conducted by health services researchers. The purpose of this project is to understand the current stock of health services researchers, the demand for health services research, and the production of health services researchers in order to prepare for needs in 2020. The deliverables will be three commissioned papers, a special issue of Health Services Research and a summit on this topic.
