Studying variation and success of rural and urban school environmental and physical activity policies for low-income Colorado students

The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. This project provides supplemental funds for a study originally funded under the Foundation's Healthy Eating Research (HER) program in its Round 1 funding that is identifying and evaluating environmental and policy features related to healthy eating among elementary schools located throughout low income, Hispanic and non-Hispanic, urban and rural Colorado. This HER supplemental grant will add to the HER Round 1 grant by including physical activity in the analysis of school wellness policies. Accelerometers will be used to collect data on student physical activity and key informant interviews will be used for gathering information on school wellness policies. The additional physical activity information provided by this supplement will contribute to the knowledge base about changes schools can make to promote physical activity during the school day.
