Wisdom at Work: Improving the retention rate of experienced nurses through renewing and reframing their nursing practice
The Foundation's initiative, Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses, was designed to build an evidence base for what works to retain experienced nurses and develop a better understanding of the impact of these interventions.According to the most recent national nursing workforce survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the current average age of RNs is nearly 47 years. Forty-six percent of practicing nurses over the age of 50 work in the hospital setting. These facts have major implications for the provision of care in the near future -- how can hospitals retain a sufficient supply of experienced nurses to meet patient care needs; how can older, experienced nurses work differently to extend their time in practice; what can hospitals do to encourage experienced nurses to stay? This program will begin to build an evidence base for what works to retain experienced nurses and develop a better understanding of the impact of these interventions. Several interventions have been identified in a white paper commissioned earlier this year by RWJF. The project will support 13 evaluative research projects and a coordinating center to oversee the work. This program directly supports the RWJF strategy to reduce the shortage in nurse staffing and improve the quality of nursing-related care by transforming the way care is delivered at the bedside. The project will be considered successful if interventions that appear to influence the retention of experienced nurses are identified.
