Studying the interaction between children and the elements in their environment that impact physical activity in rural communities
The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity.This project will develop, test and refine a conceptual model that describes the interaction between the individual and the environment as it enhances or hinders active living in rural communities. Low-income students in grades 4 through 12 in three selected rural, low-income Maine communities will provide information about their physical activity patterns and their perceptions of physical and social environments that support or create barriers to physical activity. The information collected in this study will be used to confirm and refine the conceptual model and to develop suggestions for interventions in homes, schools, and communities to facilitate increased physical activity among youth.
