The results of most quality improvement work are not published in the peer-reviewed print or electronic literature. Several reasons account for this, including lack of academic rewards for clinicians involved in improvement, editors' and peer reviewers' unfamiliarity with improvement goals and methods, and the lack of publication guidelines that are appropriate for rigorous, scholarly improvement work. This collaborative project will develop publication guidelines for quality improvement. The guidelines will help clinicians, researchers, journal editors and peer reviewers in writing, reviewing and editing articles on quality improvement work. This project will be considered successful if it results in: (1) the completion and publication of a set of guidelines for publishing quality improvement work; (2) development of a Web site on the publication guidelines; (3) formal adoption of the guidelines by a significant number of journal editors and at least one major editors' association; and (4) preparation of a document that describes the rationale for guideline content.
