Achieving Competence Today (ACT) Collaborative: Disseminating an Action-Based Interprofessional Curriculum that Incorporates Quality Improvement

Achieving Competence Today (ACT) III is an action-based, interprofessional curriculum for systems and practice improvement within academic health centers. The program has shown success in further developing the concept that learners, taking part in a curriculum designed to teach about systems, care improvement and team work, can simultaneously contribute to quality improvement efforts at their teaching hospitals. A key goal of ACT III was to determine the demand for such a program through the academic health centers' (AHCs) abilities to sustain program involvement, despite decreasing levels of support. Financial constraints within AHCs act as a barrier to widespread adoption of ACT III, despite much interest and involvement that is occurring in the existing program. The purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity for six of the top performing ACT III sites to form a collaborative, led by the University of Virginia (UVA), that will help maintain ACT as an important tool for the Foundation's strategy related to increasing the ability of health care providers to implement quality improvement. Members of the collaborative will continue their institutional participation in ACT and will also be expected to: (1) serve as an advisory committee (to UVA) member to update and maintain the ACT curriculum/Web site; (2) serve as mentors within their own system and to others throughout the nation that are interested in program implementation; (3) speak at conferences/write papers to assist in spurring national momentum for UVA's work; and (4) work with professional societies to help disseminate. This project will help the Foundation and others further understand the continued demand for this type of curriculum nationwide, given the availability of resources such as mentors and a learning network. Project deliverables include an updating and maintenance of a quality improvement curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinary team work that will be disseminated to AHCs nationwide.
