The Foundation's program, Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), was designed to develop new interventions to improve the hospital work environment with the goal of improving the quality of care provided by nurses at the bedside.Key objectives of the TCAB program are to improve the quality of patient care and services, create more effective care teams and increase nursing staff engagement, retention and efficiency. For the past two years, 13 TCAB hospitals have addressed these goals through the implementation of changes created by frontline staff to improve the work environment in medical/surgical units. In this next phase of the program, 10 of these hospitals will continue to test and spread TCAB processes and innovations to other units and other hospitals.Sites are also expected to: (1) engage participation of a multidisciplinary team -- including the required nurses, physician, school of nursing faculty member and patient and/or family member; (2) establish and maintain an active partnership with a school of nursing and include faculty and student representation on TCAB units; (3) participate in learning sessions, site visits, expert meetings, conference calls and planning retreats, along with their nursing school faculty partner; (4) collect and report monthly or quarterly unit-level and hospital-wide performance measures to inform the program evaluation; (5) facilitate and participate in collaborative learning across TCAB sites and among other units within their own hospital and hospital system; and (6) involve executive management, human resources and chief financial officers in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's IMPACT Leadership Community meetings as a complement to their TCAB activities.
