Sponsoring online, open-source idea competitions to identify promising approaches to advancing social change goals - 2006-08

Changemakers is an online community that shares innovative solutions to entrenched social and health problems. The Changemakers initiative will demonstrate the broad utility of "collaborative competitions" as a tool to identify the best insights in the nonprofit sector. This grant provides support for three online competitions and associated activities--one on domestic violence, another on chronic homelessness and supportive housing, and a third to be determined. The project will provide the Foundation with a unique opportunity to use its Web site as a portal to engage social entrepreneurs and to provide them with an interactive and transparent platform to submit, exchange, and vote on the best solutions to some of the most pressing issues that RWJF seeks to address. Additional support could be considered if the three online competitions clearly show that this model can: (1) assist and support the Foundation in finding breakthrough solutions to issues relating to health and health care, (2) stimulate social entrepreneurs to tackle issues that are of interest to RWJF, and (3) provide the Foundation with a tool that can scan the field in a way that can minimize reinvention, facilitate collaboration, and support effective interventions.
