The expertise, perspective and experience of the nursing profession is largely absent in the national-level dialogue on health care. This void hinders innovation, cost-effectiveness and the quality of care. One important step in closing these gaps is to increase the number of nurse leaders on the boards of directors of the nation's most influential nonprofit health care quality organizations, journals, and hospitals and health care systems. This contract provides support for the planning and initial rollout of a multistage initiative, Pipeline to Placement: Getting Nurses on Boards. Pipeline to Placement aims to improve nonprofit board decision making related to the quality of patient care by expanding the number of board members who understand the complexity of the quality debate. By 2008, this project will aim to place 12 nurse leaders with expertise in quality care on influential boards to enhance boards' understanding of quality care.
