This grant will enable the Endocrine Society to convene a minority health disparities forum at its 2006 and 2007 annual meetings. The forum will conduct two educational sessions designed to increase awareness about the under-representation of racial and ethnic minority populations in clinical research trials and why this "disparity" has serious consequences for the "quality of health care." Each of these meetings will bring together about 6,000 Endocrine Society members--some of whom are thought leaders and practitioners at all levels from academia and primary care facilities. In addition, the gathering will include leaders from pharmaceutical companies, granting institutions and regulatory agencies. There will also be a large group of community leaders that will include, but not be limited to, faith-based organizations such as the Black Ministerial Alliance, the Ten-Point Coalition, the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry, the Greater Boston Faith Organization and representatives of local government in the greater Boston area. The meeting proceedings will be made available to the general public. Key deliverables from this conference will include suggestions for demonstration projects that link academic and community-based organizations and requests for proposals to re-examine large-scale studies with a view to race-specific differences in outcomes.
