Formative research for disseminating California's student wellness policies

State health and education departments, school administrators and staff, school board associations, and parents are clamoring for information, tools, and guidance to assist them in developing meaningful school wellness policies to improve the nutrition and physical activity environments in schools throughout the nation. California's Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition) (CPL) and the California School Boards Association (CSBA) have developed a unique partnership and collaborative project, Successful Students Through Healthy Food Policies, to increase the adoption of healthy school policies. This partnership has created and disseminated resources and has trained school board members in developing policies to improve the school environments for children throughout California. This project will enable CPL and CSBA to: (1) conduct formative research to create a national program to help other states replicate California's success in implementing school wellness policies; and (2) create a national action plan, based upon the formative research, to assist school boards across the nation in developing and implementing evidence-based nutrition and physical activity policies as they emerge.Project deliverables include a report summarizing online surveys and focus groups with key stakeholders, and an action plan describing next steps for a national roll out.
