Developing a training series for hospital nursing and medical staff on inter- and intra-disciplinary communication
The Institute of Medicine report on nursing, Keeping Patients Safe: Transforming Care at the Bedside, notes that effective communication among health care team members is a key factor in a healthy work environment and nurse retention. Yet nurses and other health care professionals are rarely taught to become expert communicators in the clinical setting. The purpose of this project is to develop a tool kit for trainers working in health care organizations using lessons learned about safer work environments in the aviation industry using a communications training tool kit called Crew Resource Management. The tool kit for instructors in better health care communications will include video scenarios demonstrating effective communication and guidelines for using the tool kit in their hospitals. This project will be considered successful if it produces a high-quality product that is used by nurses and other clinical leaders in hospitals.
