General support for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey

In 1997, with major support from the Foundation and Johnson & Johnson, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ-RWJMS) embarked on the development of the Child Health Institute of New Jersey (CHINJ). This grant provides support for the four-year, start-up phase of CHINJ. The principal objective of CHINJ is to become an international center of excellence in research aimed at improving children's health, helping to make UMDNJ-RWJMS a leader in biomedical research, education, and clinical care. More immediately, the success of CHINJ will be measured by its ability to recruit renowned researchers in the areas of identified priority, create an environment conducive to innovative research, and explore the causes and possible treatments of birth defects and childhood diseases. The Foundation's grant will be used to help support project and administrative staff, building operations, laboratory equipment, and faculty research start-up costs. Other funding will be provided by the CHINJ endowment, faculty research grants, and general support from other foundations and corporations. Fund-raising goals are established, and will be closely monitored.
