Developing an online national resource center for parents of children with learning disabilities

Nearly 3 million students in U.S. public schools, or 6 percent of the school-age population, are currently receiving special education services for learning disabilities. A learning disability, if not identified in time, can lead to a cycle of underachievement. This grant supports the development of a new online Parents Resource Center for the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Web content will be developed in two areas: (1) guidance to parents to help children make successful transitions from grade to grade; and (2) understanding the evaluation process for determining when a child has a learning disability. The content will be developed in consultation with leading national organizations, national experts, and panels of parent volunteers. The project will be considered successful if, by the end of the grant year, there is a 60 percent growth in parent center page views, 50 percent growth in the parent center registration list, 40 percent growth of parents' e-messaging, and 20 percent growth in PDF downloads.
