The purpose of this project is to pilot test a workshop to instruct selected Foundation grantees on methods for internal evaluation (evaluation conducted by and for the grantee). Despite substantial investments by the Foundation in program evaluations, ad hoc grantees tend not to participate in evaluations, and many of the national evaluations supported do not focus on site-by-site outcomes even for national program grantees. Better ability to conduct internal evaluations should improve the success of grantees and improve their chances for sustainability. In this project, a workshop on evaluation will be conducted for up to ten grantees, with follow-on telephone advice and mentoring for a six-month period. The model is adapted from the Foundation-funded workshops that build grantee communications capacity. Project deliverables will include a grantee workshop, follow-on advice and mentoring, and a final report from the workshop leaders. The project will be considered successful if grantees develop high quality evaluation skills and plans that get implemented within the six-month, follow-up period, and if grantees report high satisfaction with the process.
